Job Scams
June 3, 2025
Job scams continue to be prevalent today, often targeting individuals looking for flexible schedules and remote work. Many of the job postings can be found on legitimate job search websites, making it difficult to distinguish between real and fake opportunities. Always research a company before applying for a job. If you think it could be a scam, try searching the company’s name and “scam” to see what you can find. Below are a few warning signs to look out for when researching employment opportunities.
- Significant money for little work – If the employer promises short hours with the potential to make a lot of money, it is likely a scam – especially if the job does not require skilled labor.
- Pay to work – If the application process involves some type of payment, it is a scam. Legitimate employers will not ask you to pay to get a job.
- Pay an unconventional way – If the business asks for you to pay them by gift card, cryptocurrency, a payment app, or a wire transfer service, it is a scam. Also, if they send you a check and ask you to send a portion back, it is a scam.
