Fraud Recovery Scams

Scams can be devastating, and unfortunately, criminals often try to take advantage of victims multiple times through fraud recovery scams. These scams target people who have already lost money by promising to help recover stolen funds in exchange for upfront fees, personal information, or account details. Fraudsters may pose as law firms, government agencies, consumer advocacy groups, or even specific organizations like the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Since scammers often have details about a victim’s original loss, their offers can sound convincing, making it even more difficult to recognize the deception.

Protecting yourself starts with skepticism. Be cautious of unsolicited offers claiming they can recover your money, especially if they pressure you to act quickly or request payment before providing a service. Legitimate government agencies and reputable organizations will never ask for upfront fees or demand sensitive personal information to release recovered funds. If someone contacts you with a recovery offer, take time to research the organization, verify its credentials, and consult trusted sources before responding. If you suspect a recovery scam, report it to law enforcement or the FBI’s IC3. Always remember that if someone asks you to pay money to get your money back, it’s almost certainly a scam.
