Mail Fraud
September 2, 2025
Mail fraud is any type of fraud that utilizes the U.S. Mail, even if it originates online or by phone. Common types of mail fraud include fraud against older Americans, fraud against veterans, sweepstakes and lottery fraud, job fraud, telemarketing fraud, and financial fraud.
Do you know how to protect yourself from mail fraud? Follow the tips below to help keep yourself safe.
- Do not share financial information with anyone you do not know or trust. This includes your Social Security number, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, etc.
- Do not agree to anything if the other party is pressuring you to make an immediate decision. Also, get everything in writing and read the fine print before you agree to enter a contest, make a purchase, or give a donation.
- Do your due diligence on companies through advocacy groups such as the Better Business Bureau, State Attorney General’s Office, or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
- Consult with a trusted friend or relative before committing to send a payment.
- Block telemarketing calls.
